Rilea Chisholm is a former member of the 2017-2018 Mining Matters team whose career journey shows how education, outreach, environmental responsibility, and applied geoscience can connect in meaningful ways. She currently works as a Senior Site Geologist and Environment Coordinator with St. Barbara Mining Atlantic Operations.

Rilea studied Earth science with an early interest in education and science communication. Her first role after graduation was with Mining Matters as an Instructor, Education and Outreach Programs. Through this experience, she travelled to rural and remote communities, supported mineral literacy, and learned how mining can connect to local opportunity, sustainability, environmental responsibility, and community engagement.

After Mining Matters, Rilea moved into applied geoscience. Her career has included work in field geology, mine planning, grade control, geological modelling, and engineering geology. These roles have involved responsibilities related to sample quality, ore-block design, ground monitoring, structural interpretation, environmental coordination, and mine safety.

“Travelling to remote communities and listening to local people’s positive impacts from mining inspired me to keep pursuing the industry to help build prosperity in rural regions. My experience with Mining Matters allowed me to join my company in outreach with local organizations and increase our positive community presence.”

Rilea’s story highlights the value of curiosity, adaptability, communication, and hands-on learning. Her pathway also reminds students that careers in the minerals industry can begin through education, outreach, Earth science, and community-based learning.
