The Ontario Mining Association, the Canadian Ecology Centre, the Canadian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy and Mining Matters have been delivering the Mineral Resource and Mining Education Tours since 2010.  

Mining Matters and the Canadian Ecology Centre invite you to participate in the 2023 Mineral Resources and Mining Education Tours. These tours are open to educators at the elementary and secondary level, post secondary and other educational institutions and individuals from companies/organizations and/or communities with links to mining and mineral resources.

The Tours provide enriching, experiential learning, connected to science and geography curricula, that focus on Earth science, modern mining, sustainability, careers, and occupational health and safety.

2022 Tour Dates:
Life in a Mining Camp: Sunday July 30 – Tuesday August 1, 2023
MINERAL RESOURCE and MINING TOUR: Monday August  21 – Tuesday August 22, 2023

A $50 application fee is required for each tour. All other costs are subsidized. The application fee will be reimbursed to any participants who are either not accepted into a tour OR at the conclusion of full participation in one of the mining tours (as this fee is being sponsored).  Participants who are accepted into a tour and then cancel their registration will not be refunded the application fee. Please note that transportation to and from the tour is not covered.

Life in a Mining Camp Tour

Experience life in a mining camp and get a a glimpse into the life of an employee at North American Palladium’s Lac Des Iles Mine, located North of Thunder Bay. Participants will get to tour a Thunder Bay mineral analysis laboratory and learn about the many mineral resource development activities currently underway in northwestern Ontario, as well as visit the Amethyst Mine Panorama.

Mine Life Cycle Tour

This tour will focus on all phases of the mining cycle and the Timmins area. The Tour will include site visits to an operating underground mine and provide participants with opportunities to learn from industry speakers sharing their professional experiences as they set a foundation for the Tour while also providing glimpses into mineral resource, mining and environmental careers. Accommodation will be provided by the Canadian Ecology Centre.

Mineral Resources and Mining Foundations Tour   

This tour will focus on providing participants with a foundational understanding of Earth science and mineral resources, through education and training workshops and local field trips; engaging with education and industry professionals; and site visits to mine service supply companies in North Bay. Accommodations will be provided by the Canadian Ecology Centre.
