About

Mining Matters offers professional development opportunities at the numerous conventions and conferences that we attend every year. Look for us at the following events:

Prospectors and Developers Association of Canada (PDAC) Annual Convention

Each year at the annual Prospectors and Developers Association of Canada (PDAC) ConventionMining Matters hosts teachers for a full-day of programming. The event takes place in the Metro Toronto Convention Centre (MTCC) where teachers are exposed to a day packed with hands-on activities, guest speakers, and a tour of the PDAC Trade Show floor, speaking to geologists, industry professionals, and mining technology specialists. This event takes place in coordination with the PDAC convention dates (usually first Sunday in March).

Teacher Mining Tour: Canadian Ecology Centre

Mining Matters has been presenting hands-on engaging classroom activities in a workshop during the week-long Teacher Mining Tour offered by the Canadian Ecology Centre (CEC) in Matawa, Ontario. This free professional development opportunity occurs each summer with 25-30 participants. Experience what it is like to go down underground, meet professionals in the mining industry, and learn about the riches of Canadian geology. Space is limited. Contact the CEC for more details.

Science Teachers Association of Manitoba

The Special Area Groups of Educators (SAGE) affiliated with The Manitoba Teachers’ Society are organizations of educators in specific fields.  They offer professional development, camaraderie and a forum to share ideas and insights. Special Area Group conferences and workshops present the best ideas from the brightest minds in teaching.

The Science Teachers Association of Manitoba (STAM) SAGE Conference is an annual event that takes place on the Friday of the third week each October. This long standing event is entering its 42 year. STAM exists with the goal to promote and support the development of science education for teachers and students of Manitoba. Mining Matters has been a workshop presenter at this event since 2010 delivering hands-on engaging  Earth science activities to Manitoba (and the odd time Saskatchewan) elementary and middle school teachers.

Manitoba Mining and Minerals Convention - Manitoba Rocks! Education Program

Manitoba Rocks!, the Manitoba Geological Survey’s mineral education and community-based outreach program, is now in its 15th year of active outreach and will be rockin’ again this November with its popular schools tour and public activity during the annual Manitoba Mining and Minerals Convention in Winnipeg.  The program invites greater Winnipeg area educators, some 300 grade 4 to 7 students, and the public to explore a motherlode of exciting interactive displays – from gold-panning to fossil digs, to a black light display of global mineral specimens, and more. The 2015 Manitoba Rocks! Program also includes activities and displays from a national Mining Matters mineral education representative, the Mineral Society of Manitoba, the Canadian Fossil Discovery Centre, and the Manitoba Prospectors and Developers Association.

The
Manitoba Rocks! program reflects the commitment of the Manitoba Geological Survey to continue to actively promote geosciences and to engage and encourage young Manitobans, educators, and the public to learn more about the province’s second-largest primary resources industry: minerals and petroleum.
