Mark Paddey is a former Mining Matters intern whose career journey connects geoscience outreach, northern resource development, public service, community relationships, and field exploration. He currently describes his occupation as an Exploration Geologist.

Through Mining Matters, Mark delivered educational programming and gained experience working with industry representatives, governments, and Indigenous communities. One of his most memorable experiences involved visiting a northern community near the Ring of Fire, where the Mining Matters team participated in a traditional bush camp and learned from community members and Elders. These experiences strengthened his understanding of the value of listening, relationship-building, and recognizing different forms of knowledge.

After Mining Matters, Mark spent six years working with the Government of the Northwest Territories in Yellowknife. As a Resource Pathfinder, he helped early-stage exploration companies understand the steps, relationships, meetings, and regulatory processes involved in advancing mineral projects. His work operated at the intersection of government and regulators, the minerals industry, and Indigenous governments.

Mark continues to participate in the minerals industry through occasional prospecting and geotechnical fieldwork. These projects may involve remote camps, soil sampling, core work, geological testing, and early-stage exploration activities.

“I was introduced to countless friends, mentors, role models, and culture - and through it all, absorbed more information about the minerals industry in Canada than I would have thought possible. Though I may not have realized it at the time, these experiences would form the foundation of my career.”

Mark’s story demonstrates that geoscience careers can move through outreach, government, relationship-building, resource development, and independent fieldwork. It also shows how early community experiences can shape the way professionals approach communication and responsible development throughout their careers.
